Global leaders are coming together in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, November 6–18 for COP27 with the goal to raise ambition and accelerate action to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Representatives from Carbon Mapper and our coalition of partners will be among the NGO’s attending to provide support to countries, and scale solutions to the climate crisis.

Carbon Mapper’s work to pinpoint methane super emitters across multiple sectors is particularly relevant to the Global Methane Pledge. Since the Pledge was announced one year ago, at COP26, a total of 125 countries have committed to reduce methane emissions 30% by 2030 signifying unprecedented political will to tackle this powerful greenhouse gas. Today, we have an opportunity to arm leaders in the public and private sectors to build on this #methanemomentum with transparent data and insights on the exact sources of methane emissions to guide science-based mitigation actions.

Staff on-the-ground will be closely tracking the following themes and events with these opportunities in mind.

Data to action – advancing emissions transparency

Understanding methane emissions and pinpointing their exact sources are critical steps to mitigating them, and there are new technological capabilities will be in the spotlight at COP27 that have the potential to change the game.

Carbon Mapper and others in the public and private sector are leveraging remote-sensing technologies to contribute unprecedented data and insights that can help leaders in the public and private sector prioritize actions that can cut methane quickly—like immediate leak repairs, or longer-term solutions like regulations or policies that take aim at methane super-emitters.

Tackling global waste methane emissions

Addressing solid waste methane emissions presents a significant near-term opportunity. This sector accounts for 18% of human-caused emissions globally yet has not received as much attention as other emitting sectors like oil and gas. Countries that have signed on to the Global Methane Pledge and private sector leaders are increasingly prioritizing this sector to advance their climate goals, and there is a great deal of momentum expected with forthcoming announcements of new waste methane initiatives, programs, and insights.
